Treated lumber has two key specifications: its preservative and its exposure rating. Check the stamped end tag for the use category, preservative, retention, treating company, and inspection agency.
Retention numbers vary by preservative, wood species, product, and end use. A higher number from one treatment system cannot be compared directly with another. The correct AWPA Use Category is the clearer starting point.
Good for: deck boards and rails that drain and stay above the water.
Not for: pilings, ground contact, framing in the splash zone, or immersion.
Good for: general ground contact, freshwater exposure, and frequently wet components when specified.
Not for: direct saltwater or brackish water exposure.
Good for: severe decay conditions, critical components, and saltwater splash zones.
Not for: continuous marine immersion unless separately rated for it.
Good for: critical land and freshwater piling and very severe decay exposure.
Not for: automatic substitution for a rating for marine borers in salt water.
Good for: pilings, bracing, and bulkhead components actually exposed to Florida salt or brackish water.
Important: marine specifications depend on the component, preservative, species, and project requirements.
MATERIALS ELITE MARINE USES
When a project calls for wood, Elite Marine uses CCA treated lumber. We match the treatment to the component and its exposure, including the required rating for marine use.
WearDeck by Owens Corning is our primary source for FRP composite lumber. This system contains no wood and resists rot, rust, moisture, and outdoor exposure.

ELITE MARINE RECOMMENDED COMPOSITE
WearDeck® by Owens Corning is a composite decking and structural lumber system that contains no wood.
Fiberglass reinforces its HDPE material for strength and weather resistance in residential and commercial projects.
View the official product line ↗The 5/4 × 6 inch deck board is designed to span 24 inches on center. Owens Corning rates it for ground contact and underwater use in fresh and salt water.
Framing and posts reinforced with fiberglass offer an alternative to wood and steel. They come in familiar lumber sizes and use standard woodworking methods.
Every decking color includes technology that reflects heat. The boards are designed for low expansion and contraction and come in multiple sizes and colors.
Elite Marine does not use copper azole or ACQ lumber for marine construction. General guidance for treated wood is based on the AWPA Use Category System and the EPA overview of wood preservatives. WearDeck product statements are based on the official Owens Corning Lumber product line and Marine Grade Decking® specifications. Final material selection must follow manufacturer specifications, project design, permitting requirements, and site conditions.
SERVICE QUESTIONS
Yes. Each dock is planned around the property, shoreline access, vessel needs, and how the homeowner wants to use the waterfront.
Yes. Dock and lift improvements can be coordinated so the layout works as one complete waterfront system.
Elite Marine uses CCA treated lumber or FRP composite lumber for marine construction. WearDeck is our primary source for FRP composite lumber. We do not use copper azole or ACQ lumber for marine construction.
When treated wood is used, Elite Marine specifies CCA treated lumber matched to the component and exposure. Wood exposed to Florida salt or brackish water generally requires an AWPA UC5C rating for marine use. FRP composite lumber is also available, with WearDeck by Owens Corning as our primary composite source.
